Why algaecide matters for Harvest pools

Algae isn't just ugly — once it takes hold, it consumes chlorine 10× faster than clean water, wasting your sanitizer budget and giving you chloramines, cloudy water, and staining. The right algaecide prevents the bloom in the first place (polyquat, weekly dose), kills an existing bloom (copper-based, one-time shock), and removes the phosphates algae eat to grow back. DFW summers are prime algae season — a $15 bottle of algaecide saves a $300 green-to-clean service.

Municipal water supply yielding relatively soft, balanced water. The primary maintenance challenge in Harvest stems from the high density of new construction dust in the newer phases and the heavy bather load common with young families.

Algaecide questions from Harvest customers

Why does algae keep coming back in Harvest pools?▾
Three usual culprits in Harvest: (1) low free chlorine at night (below 1 ppm lets spores establish), (2) phosphates above 300 ppb feeding regrowth, and (3) high cyanuric acid (above 80 ppm) which effectively neutralizes chlorine. Fix those three and algae doesn't recur. We sell all the diagnostic tools and the fixes — bring a sample to our Northlake store for a free test.
Best algaecide for a Harvest pool?▾
For weekly prevention in Harvest, polyquat 60 (copper-free) is our default — it doesn't stain plaster, it's safe for salt cells, and it's one bottle a month for an average pool. Many Harvest pools run salt chlorine generators, which changes how we dose the other chemicals. Copper-based is fine as an occasional knockdown tool on city water, but don't use it weekly.
Do I need a phosphate remover for my Harvest pool?▾
If you've had two algae blooms in the last year, yes. Phosphates are algae food — under 100 ppb is ideal; above 500 ppb, no amount of chlorine keeps algae out. Can you deliver algaecide same-day to Harvest if my pool's already turning?▾
Yes — and time matters. Every hour of full sun on a borderline-green pool doubles the problem. Order by 2 PM Central weekdays and we deliver same-day from the Northlake store. Polyquat vs copper algaecide — which do I use?▾
Polyquat 60: weekly preventative, doesn't stain, safe for salt pools. Copper-based: kills existing algae fast, but can stain plaster and hair if overdosed — use as one-time knockdown only, not weekly. Rule of thumb: polyquat weekly, copper only when you see an active bloom.
Can I swim after adding algaecide?▾
Polyquat: 15 minutes. Copper-based: 15 minutes but avoid swimming within 48 hours of a metal shock (staining risk on wet skin/hair). Wait for the pump to circulate fully (one full turnover) before entering.
