What we repair on the Pentair Challenger
An induction motor with a start capacitor. The capacitor, the seal and the bearings are the usual failures — all repairable on the spot when the part is on the truck.
- Hums but will not start — usually the start capacitor, sometimes a seized shaft
- Trips the breaker or overheats — motor windings, wiring, or a failing bearing
- Leaking at the shaft seal (water under the motor) — a new mechanical seal before the bearings rust
- Air in the basket and losing prime — lid o-ring, basket, drain plugs, suction-side unions
- Loud grinding or screeching — worn motor bearings
- Low flow — impeller clogged or worn, diffuser gasket, basket
- Cracked strainer housing, lid or basket

Repair first when it makes sense. When the housing is cracked, the motor is failing on an old single-speed, or the parts are no longer made, these are the pumps to look at:
Why a replacement pump is almost always variable-speed now
- Since July 19, 2021, new pool filter pumps have had to meet a federal Department of Energy efficiency standard. For the common in-ground size — a single-phase, self-priming pump of about 1.15 motor horsepower (0.711 hydraulic horsepower) or more — DOE says that standard would likely require a variable-speed motor. (10 CFR 431.465)
- Since September 29, 2025, new pool pump motors from 1.15 to 5 total horsepower must be variable-speed — including a motor sold on its own to replace a failed one. Once older stock is gone, a worn-out single-speed motor of that size is replaced with a variable-speed one, not another single-speed. (10 CFR 431.485)
- Smaller pool pump motors (0.5 to under 1.15 total horsepower) must be variable-speed when made on or after September 28, 2027; DOE has said it will not seek penalties on those small motors made before March 26, 2029. (DOE enforcement policy, April 2026)
- ENERGY STAR still certifies pool pumps; EPA says certified in-ground models use about 20% less energy than standard ones. (ENERGY STAR pool pumps)
