Cartridge, DE or sand — we take the filter apart, clean it the way that type needs, check it for damage and record the clean pressure, so you know when the next one is due.
Clean it when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 psi above its clean reading — the rule in the filter makers’ manuals. On Robson Ranch’s municipal water most cartridges want a clean every 4–6 months. Sand and DE filters are backwashed at the same rise and taken apart when a backwash stops bringing the pressure down.
We price a filter clean at the visit: it is the on-site time for your filter type plus only the parts it needs, such as a tank o-ring, filter cleaner or a DE recharge. A new cartridge, grid or sand is quoted only when the old one is done.
No backwash setting at all means a cartridge filter: the elements come out and every pleat is hosed clean. If you add white powder through the skimmer after a backwash, it is DE — backwashed, taken apart to clean the grids, then recharged with fresh DE. A multiport valve and no powder means sand, which is backwashed and, when that stops working, chemically cleaned.
Yes: turn the pump off and open the air relief so the tank is not under pressure, then pull the cartridge and hose it from the top down, pleat by pleat — never with a pressure washer, which tears the fabric. Soak it in filter cleaner if it is greasy or crusted, and lube the tank o-ring before you close it. Book us if the pleats are torn, the end caps are loose, or the pressure stays high after a clean.
On site, a cartridge clean takes about an hour, a DE clean and recharge about 1¼ hours, and a sand filter service about 45 minutes. That is the whole visit: shut down, clean, check for damage, reassemble and record the new clean pressure.

Sand in the pool, very short runs between backwashes, or sand past its years mean new sand or laterals — a repair visit.
