As winter fades and temperatures begin to rise, many pool owners start thinking about preparing their pools for the season. A proper spring startup is one of the most important steps in keeping your pool clear, safe, and running efficiently all summer long.
Starting your pool correctly helps prevent cloudy water, algae growth, and unnecessary strain on equipment. Whether you maintain your pool yourself or rely on professional service, taking the right steps early in the season makes a big difference.
Below is a simple guide to getting your pool ready for swim season.

Step 1: Start With a Visual Inspection
Before turning on your equipment, take a few minutes to walk around your pool and inspect everything. During the winter months, debris and small issues can accumulate without being noticed.
Look for leaves, sticks, or other debris that may have collected in the pool or skimmers. Check that skimmer baskets are intact and not cracked. It’s also a good idea to glance over the equipment pad to make sure nothing appears loose, damaged, or leaking.
Removing debris first helps prevent clogs once the circulation system starts running again.
Step 2: Check Your Pool Equipment
Spring is a great time to make sure your pool equipment is operating correctly. Pumps, filters, and heaters may have been idle or running less frequently during colder months.
Before starting the pump, clean out the pump basket and confirm that all valves are positioned correctly. Once the system starts running, listen for unusual noises and watch for air bubbles in the pump basket, which can indicate suction-side air leaks.
Also, check components such as your filter tank, valves, heater, and salt cell if your pool has a salt system. Catching small issues early can prevent bigger repairs later in the season.

Step 3: Clean or Backwash the Filter
A clean filter is essential when starting the pool for the season. Over time, filters collect debris, oils, and contaminants that reduce water flow and filtration performance.
The cleaning process depends on your filter type.
Cartridge filters should be removed and rinsed thoroughly. DE filters should be backwashed and recharged with fresh DE powder. Sand filters should be backwashed until the water runs clear.
Starting the season with a clean filter makes it much easier to maintain clear water as temperatures warm up.

Step 4: Test and Balance the Water
Water chemistry often shifts during the winter months. Even if the water looks clear, chemical levels may be out of balance.
Testing and adjusting the following levels is important:
-
Free chlorine
-
pH
-
Total alkalinity
-
Calcium hardness
-
Cyanuric acid (stabilizer)
Balanced water not only helps prevent algae but also protects pool surfaces and equipment from damage.
Step 5: Shock the Pool
Spring is a good time to perform a shock treatment, even if the pool appears clean. Organic contaminants can build up over time, and warmer weather encourages algae growth.
Shocking the pool helps eliminate early algae spores and refreshes the chlorine in the water. After shocking, allow the pump to circulate the pool for at least 24 hours to properly distribute the chemicals.
Step 6: Check Circulation and Water Flow
Once your pool system is running, pay attention to circulation. Proper water movement is key to keeping the pool clean and balanced.
Make sure return jets are pushing water evenly and that skimmers are pulling debris efficiently. Keep an eye on the filter pressure gauge as well. If the pressure rises about 8–10 PSI above the clean starting pressure, it’s time to clean the filter again.
Monitoring circulation early helps prevent cloudy water later in the season.

Step 7: Inspect Pool Accessories
Finally, take a moment to check the accessories that make your pool enjoyable and safe.
Test your pool lights, confirm ladders and handrails are secure, and check that your pool cleaner is functioning properly. If your pool has automation or timers, verify that schedules and settings are correct.
These small checks can save time and frustration once the swimming season is in full swing.
A Smooth Start Makes the Season Easier
Many pool problems that show up in the middle of summer actually begin during spring startup. Taking the time to prepare your pool now helps prevent cloudy water, early algae blooms, and unnecessary equipment wear.
A properly started pool is easier to maintain, uses chemicals more efficiently, and helps ensure a smoother swim season.
