Your Step-by-Step Guide to Spa Start up Done Right

Get Ready for Relaxation

Starting up your spa or hot tub the right way ensures clean, balanced, and inviting water all season long. Whether you’re reopening after a break or setting up a new unit, a proper start-up routine protects your equipment and guarantees a better spa experience.

Cooler evenings make fall and winter the perfect time to enjoy your spa — and Sirona Spa Care products make the process simple, reliable, and effective.

Step 1: Drain, Clean, and Inspect

Goal: Start with a clean slate.

Before refilling your hot tub, always drain the old water and give it a thorough clean. Over time, residue and biofilm can accumulate inside jets and plumbing, impacting both water clarity and performance.

Steps to follow:

  • Drain the water completely using your spa’s drain valve or a submersible pump.

  • Wipe the shell, jets, and waterline with Jet & Surface Cleaner to remove buildup, oils, and grime.

  • Clean your filter with Filter Cleaner or replace it if it’s due.

  • Inspect your spa cover, heater, and seals for cracks or damage before refilling.

A thorough cleaning ensures your water stays clearer longer and helps extend the life of your equipment.

Our recommended products: Jet Cleaner, Filter Cleaner.

Step 2: Refill

Goal: Use clean, balanced water for better product efficiency.

Once your spa is spotless, refill it using filtered water to prevent metals and minerals from entering the system. Hard or unfiltered water can cause staining, scaling, and cloudy water.

Pro tip:

  • As your spa fills, add Metal & Scale Control to help prevent mineral buildup and discoloration.

  • Fill to the manufacturer’s recommended level to maintain proper jet function and circulation.

Our recommended product: Metal and Scale Control

Step 3: Balance Water

Goal: Properly balanced water protects your spa and your skin.

Balanced water helps sanitizers work more effectively. Make sure to always refer to your spa's owner's manual when altering chemistry.

Use a Test Kit to check:

  • pH: Should be between 7.2–7.8

  • Alkalinity: Between 80–120 ppm

  • Calcium Hardness: 150–250 ppm

To adjust levels:

  • Use Spa Up or Down to manage the pH levels and Alkalinity.

  • Add Calcium Booster if the hardness is too low.

Allow 30 minutes between each adjustment and retest to confirm results. Proper balance now saves you time and chemicals later.

Our recommended products: Spa Up, Spa Down, Calcium Booster

Step 4: Sanitize and Shock

Goal: Keep the water clean, clear, and bacteria-free.

Once your water is balanced, it’s time to sanitize. Sanitizer kills bacteria and keeps your spa safe for daily use.

Your options:

  • Bromide Tabs: Ideal for long-lasting, steady sanitation.

  • Chlorinating Granules: Perfect for quick-start or high-use spas.

After sanitizing, apply Activate Granular (Non-Chlorine Shock) to oxidize oils, lotions, and organic buildup. Regular shocking keeps your water fresh, eliminates odors, and extends the life of your sanitizer.

Our recommended Products: Bromide Tabs, Chlorinating Granules, Active Granular

Step 5: Condition and Clarify

Goal: Maintain clear, soft, and comfortable water.

Once your water is clean and sanitized, finish your start-up routine with a few key Sirona products that enhance comfort and clarity.

Recommended finishing touches:

  • Add Conditioner to soften water and protect surfaces from scale.

  • Use Clarifier weekly to keep water sparkling clear.

  • Apply Foam Out if bubbles form on the surface.

Our recommended Products: Conditioner, Clarifier, Foam Out

Step 6: Regular Maintenance

Goal: Keep your water perfect week after week.

  • Test your water at least once a week with either strips or a digital water tester

  • Maintain Filters by rinsing frequently and fully cleaning once a month.

  • Drain and refill every 3 months or after heavy use for the freshest water.

With consistent care, your spa will always be ready when you are.
